The floor of this crater is filled with dark lava and therefore darker than the lunar maria. The crater is surrounded by a very flat wall and is located near the lunar edge. Because of the curvature of the lunar surface, it appears as a significantly distorted ellipse. In reality, the 107 mile (172 km) wide Grimaldi is approximately circular.
