Mercury is one of the biggest challenges for observers. Since it is never very far away from the Sun, it can only be observed shortly after sunset or just before sunrise, and its visibility phases are limited to a few days. With binoculars, you‘ve got the best chances if you stand completely in the shadow and scour the area in which it is located. As long as you are using your device in the shadow, the Sun cannot get into your field of vision accidentally and possibly damage your eyes. The small planet is always very low above the horizon, so even in a telescope you can‘t see any details – the air turbulence will distort the image.
